The Academy’s expeditions to Karelia

A nature route across Karelia, attention practices, a shared group rhythm and mentor support. The 2027 dates and the organisational conditions are confirmed before registration.

Planning a trip to Vottovaara in Karelia? Here are the provisional 2027 dates, the preparation, the format of participation and direct ways to reach the mentors.

Have you already taken Academy programmes? Describe your background in the request and a mentor will suggest the format of participation that fits your practice.

In format this is an educational trip and a practice of attention: it is not a medical, psychological or tour-operator service and it promises no guaranteed result.

Planning the trip

Start with a clear next step

You can break the decision into steps: choose a date, look at the route, check what preparation is needed — and ask a mentor one specific question.

Check the provisional dates

Two summer groups are planned: 19–25 July and 25 July – 1 August 2027. Before you register the mentors will confirm the current schedule and the places available — write and tell us which date you have in mind.

See the schedule

Ask about preparation

Before departure we go through the physical demands of the route and the kit needed for a Karelian summer: changeable weather, wet ground, field conditions. The final equipment list is agreed in advance so you can pack without rushing.

What to bring

Get to know the format

At the core of the programme is a nature route with stops for observation, exercises in attention and silence, and a shared daily rhythm for the group. The mentors are there at every stage, from the first consultation to the journey home.

Open the programme

Ask an organisational question

The quickest way to get clarity is to ask a specific question: name the date that suits you and describe your experience (any hiking, any Academy programmes). We will answer about dates, route, physical demands and conditions.

The expedition programme

What the trip format includes

The shape of the day comes from the route, the weather and the group’s fitness — the mentors make the final calls on the spot to keep everyone safe.

Route

The natural sites of Karelia

The route is made up of walking sections at a manageable pace: transfers between locations, stops for observation and rest, and a margin for bad weather. The mentors agree the order of the points with the group before the start.

Practice

Attention and self-observation

Each day includes short attention exercises, a practice of silence and writing observations in a diary. Watch your own condition: the pace and the load are adjusted to the group, not the other way round.

Context

The culture and nature of the North

The cultural context of the North — the history of the places, the names, Karelian folklore — is treated as part of the educational programme: with respect for the region’s traditions and without imitating closed practices.

Limits and safety

What to consider before registering

This is an honest trip: it asks for personal responsibility, physical fitness and respect for the natural environment. Here is what to keep in mind before registering.

Not a medical service

The expedition is an educational and practical format, not a medical or psychological service. For health matters rely on the advice of qualified specialists.

Not a promise of results

Every participant lives the trip in their own way — that is the nature of any experience outdoors. The Academy is honest about the limits: there is no promise of an identical result.

Weather conditions

A Karelian summer is changeable: rain, wind and a cold snap may become part of the day. That is why the pace and the route points are adjusted to the weather and to the group — safety always comes first.

Formats and the preparation required

Before registration we go through clothing, footwear, personal items and the group rules: what you must bring, what you can leave at home and how the field accommodation works.

Respect for the place

The rules are simple: leave no trace, respect the natural sites and the cultural context of the region, keep to the group’s pace. They help us leave the place as we found it.

Questions in advance

If you are not sure the format suits you, start with a short consultation: two or three questions to a mentor will help you decide calmly.

Formats and preparation

After the consultation we settle the equipment, the organisational details and the group’s safety rules — before you start packing.

03

The trip itself: the nature route, the shared daily routine, attention practices and mentors with the group on site.

04

Integrating the experience

After the expedition there is room for integration: questions about your observations, a mentor’s recommendations and a gentle return to your usual rhythm without a sharp change of load.

In brief

How preparation for the expedition works

Karelia

The route runs through Karelia: forests, water and open spaces — northern landscapes that stay with people for a long time.

Vottovaara

The main point of the programme is Mount Vottovaara with its distinctive landscape, whose history we discuss within the cultural context of the region.

2 groups

Two groups are planned for the summer of 2027, so that everyone has a choice of dates.

Formats and preparation

How to prepare for the trip

The final list is confirmed by the organisers. Preparation starts early: you assess the demands, pack and ask your questions before departure.

Clothing

The difference between daytime and evening temperatures in Karelia is noticeable: layers for cool weather, a windproof jacket, spare socks and field clothing are the basics. The organisers confirm the exact list against the forecast before departure.

Footwear

Your main pair should have a good sole for wet ground and nature trails; a dry spare pair is welcome at the camp in the evening.

Personal items

Field conditions: a tent, a sleeping place, insect repellent, a personal first-aid kit and camping gear. The final list is agreed and the organisers send it before departure.

The Academy and its support

How the expedition is organised

We try to make everything clear before you register: dates, terms of participation, group rules and contacts. If something stays unclear, that is a reason to write rather than to guess.

Taking part with care

Every participant keeps the group rules: a shared pace, cleanliness and care for the natural environment and the places we visit.

02
Route

Safety first

If the weather or the group’s condition calls for it, the pace changes and a route point is adjusted. Health and safety matter more than the schedule.

03
Context

No appropriation of traditions

The culture of the North is treated as the history and philosophy of the region: we study it, discuss it and respect it. There is no imitation of closed practices.

Before registration

A consultation about joining the expedition

Before registration we suggest a short conversation: dates, route, preparation, the format of participation and organisational questions — all in one exchange of messages.

A short question

If you have just one question — “which date is nearest and what should I bring?” — a short message is enough: we will answer with the schedule and the list.

Write to us

An individual conversation

If you have little hiking experience or doubts about the demands, we will go through preparation with you individually and say honestly what to consider before registering.

Feedback you can verify

Reviews of the Academy’s expeditions

Below are extracts from public reviews by participants, each with the source so you can check the quote. They describe the personal experience of particular people and are no guarantee of a similar outcome: everyone lives the trip in their own way.

“Special thanks for the arrangements, the equipment, the care and the involvement.”

Honest description

How we describe the trip

We describe the trip so that before registration you know what the format is, how demanding it is and where its limits lie. No inflated promises.

Accuracy

Facts kept separate from accounts of practice

The facts — dates, route, equipment, conditions — are kept separate from accounts of personal experience. Where a text describes “experience”, that is someone’s personal path, not a promise to you.

The pages state:

  • dates and route;
  • equipment;
  • the terms of registration;
  • limits and safety.
Safety

No medical promises

The trip is an educational format in a natural setting. No medical promises, no “recoveries”, no substitute for professional help: health questions are for specialists.

We never use:

  • guarantees of a result;
  • promises of “recovery”;
  • a substitute for medical care;
  • pressure on participants.

Before registration

The main questions about the Karelia expedition

Short answers for your first planning. The current dates, the route and the organisational conditions are confirmed before registration.

When do the expeditions take place?

Provisional dates for 2027: 19–25 July and 25 July – 1 August. Before registering, do check that the schedule, the route and the places are still current.

What should I bring?

The basic list includes warm clothing, sturdy footwear, mosquito repellent, a personal first-aid kit and camping gear. The organisers confirm the final list before departure.

Is any prior preparation needed?

Before the trip we discuss the route, the expected physical demands, your experience and the organisational limits. If in doubt, ask a mentor in advance.

What does the expedition format include?

The format includes the nature route, a shared group routine, attention practices and mentor support. The exact programme depends on the weather, the route and the make-up of the group.

Is the expedition a medical or a tourist service?

No. This is an educational trip and a practice of attention. It does not replace a doctor, a psychologist, the advice of qualified specialists or the services of a licensed tour operator.

How long does the expedition last?

Each group lasts six to seven days: departure, the nature route, attention practices and the return. The 2027 dates are 19–25 July and 25 July – 1 August; the schedule is confirmed before registration.

What hiking experience do I need?

No prior experience is required, but we are honest about the demands: walking sections, the pace, Karelian weather. If you are unsure, start with a consultation and a mentor will tell you what to consider.

What happens if the weather turns bad?

The pace and the route points are adjusted to the weather and to the group — safety comes first. Some exercises are done at the camp whatever the rain.

How do accommodation and meals work?

Conditions are those of a field camp: tents and equipment from the agreed list, which the organisers confirm before departure. We give the exact camp details at registration.

Can I come on my own, without friends?

Yes: groups include both first-timers and people who have been coming for years. Mentors are with you at every stage, from your first question to the route itself.

Do we sleep outdoors?

Yes, the format is a field camp: a tent and a sleeping place are on the agreed equipment list. The group moves during the day and sleeps at the camp; we give the accommodation details before departure.

How does the group stay in touch with the mentors during the trip?

Before departure we agree how to stay in touch with the mentors: contacts, meeting times and how alerts are sent. Participants only need to keep the agreed app to hand and know the group’s meeting points.

What if I cannot keep up with the group’s pace?

The pace is set with a margin: rest points are built into the programme and the mentors adjust the pace to the group. If there is a health question, we deal with it calmly and on the spot — safety always comes first.

What happens after the expedition?

There is room for integration afterwards: you can ask a mentor about your observations and diary notes, get recommendations for further practice and return calmly to your usual rhythm.
